About

I'm a hint of sparkle, a bit of grit, and a touch of humor.

My name is Alaina Zyhowski. I transitioned into the writing world from the teaching universe.

While in the classroom, I field-tested my picture book manuscript about Olette the Octopus with fourth and fifth graders. I used my own story because it addressed the issue of bullying through quirky marine creatures. I wanted to see if it would make an impact on some kids with rough edges. My students were able to think deeply about theme and wrote how the main character changed after she met the aquatic guitarist. After the story, I noticed less kid-to-kid jagged stares and more soft smiles. My story made an impact.

I became an active member of the Society for Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators for three years in Orchard Park and Buffalo, New York. I learned a great deal from our critique groups as I received and gave effective feedback.

Call me unusual, but I’ve always thought editing was fun. It’s made me the go-to person for friends and colleagues needing to pare down an introduction, proofread a report, and even revise a grant proposal. (Grant received!)

I provide freelance writing services through Ingenuity A to Z. Check out my new business here.
